The Bloods suffered more away day blues to leave serious question mark over their promotion credentials, despite the result leaving them sitting in fourth place.

They could have had a dream start at Shawbridge when they were awarded a rather soft penalty on 14 minutes, but Ciaran Kilheeney’s spot kick was turned onto the post by Alex Palffy, with Adam Morning finding the angle too  tight to convert the loose ball.

The miss seemed to affect Droylsden, as their hosts began to express themselves, with David Lynch, Simon Garner and Sefton Gonzales all going close.  Hence, it was little surprise when Clitheroe took the lead through the impressive Corey Bent, who made inroads down the right flank before slotting past Russell Saunders.

In first half added time, Clitheroe conceded a sloppy free kick when Seydon Bamba fouled Ben Deegan, and Morning curled a beauty into the top corner to level matters.

Michael Monaghan saw two good chances go beggin early in the second half, but Bamba showed him how to do it by beating Morning before firing into the far corner from 20 yards to restore the hosts’ lead.

Droylsden once again levelled through another Morning free kick, although this time it was one of those balls played into the box, and with Palffy’s view blocked by Kilheeney, the ball eluded him to cross the line.

It looked as though Droylsden might nick the win when Alberto Cortes wriggled through to shoot, but Palffy tipped his effort on to the post, and so it was left to former Blood, Gonzales to muscle past Ally Brown to set up Louis Mayers with a simple conversion for the winner three minutes from time.

Droylsden need to start picking up more points away from home, otherwise their hopes of promotion might get left on the hard shoulder.
