EvoStik Northern Premier League – Division One (North)

A brace of victories has rekindled Droylsden’s flickering play-off hopes, and next Saturday’s home game against Spennymoor Town is a must-win.

However, a performance like the first half one at the Warehouse Systems Stadium will be insufficient against fellow play-off chasers.  The Bloods fell behind to a Timothy Taylor strike on the half hour mark, and at that point it was fully deserved by the dominant hosts.  Ben Hampson tried to dribble his way out of defence, and the Albion winger robbed him before firing past Craig Ellison off the foot of the post.

Peter Dogan almost repeated the feat, this time gifting the ball to Nicholas Matthews, who squared for Connor Bower to let Droylsden off the hook by shooting over from 10 yards out.

The Bloods emerged a different proposition in the second half, Dave Pace’s words no doubt ringing in their ears, with Ben Deegan’s near post header from Danny Ting’s free kick setting the stage for the victory.

After levelling matters just five minutes into the second half, Deegan was again at the centre of the action when he was hauled down in the box by Dominic Riordan, with Ciaran Kilheeney converting from the spot.

The points were secured eight minutes later when Kilheeney beat home keeper, Brett Souter, in a chase for the ball to slot home from 25 yards.

Ellison saved well from Bower at the other end, but Droylsden maintained their control to see out the win.
