DROYLSDEN 0 – 2 NORTHWICH VICTORIA

EvoStik Northern Premier League – Division One (North)

Monday 7 April 2015

by Gary Owen

The result capped a miserable Easter for Droylsden, with two defeats and a total of three dismissals to contemplate.

This was an ill-tempered affair, which was broadly finely balanced.  There was little to write home about for much of the first half, but the controversy began on 39 minutes when Mr. Jackson awarded a harsh penalty against Vics for a handball that looked to be committed outside the box.  However, Ciaran Kilheeney failed to hit the target with his spot kick, letting Vics off the hook.

That miss was punished five minutes later when another handball went unnoticed by the officials, just as happened at Darlington, and Vics broke away for Gary Burnett to keep his composure and slot past the exposed Craig Ellison.

Droylsden bossed possession after the break in search of the equaliser, but without really stretching Tim Deasy.  Josh Sumner capped a fine display with a dipping effort that flew a yard over the bar, but Ellison also had to be smart to save when one-on-one with Burnett.

Just after the hour mark, Kerr saw red for a dangerous challenge, adding to the defender’s disciplinary issues, and despite all of Droylsden’s huffing and puffing, it was Vics who had the final say when Ian Howard slotted inside Ellison left hand upright after Stuart Cook had worked the chance by holding off Danny Ting deep into added time.

Droylsden finished the game with nine men when Peter Dogan saw red for the second game in succession, this time for dissent.
