EVOSTIK NPL Division One (North)

Saturday 15 August 2015

This was a typical cagey season opener from both sides in the North Yorkshire sunshine at Station View.

The hosts were the better side in the first half and caught The Bloods napping with the opening goal inside five minutes.  Cameron Lyn – who was lively throughout for the home side – squared the ball unselfishly to Vincent Dhesi who side footed calmly past the exposed Craig Ellison with the Droylsden defence gone AWOL.

However, less than a minute before that, Fernando Moke showed his early season rustiness when he failed to get sufficient purchase to a Dempsey Smith pull back in a similar position from which Dhesi scored.

Chances were rare for the remainder of the first half, with Luke Sharry curling a blocked free kick wide of the mark for Droylsden, and Ryan Sharrocks shooting straight at Ellison for Harrogate Railway.

Although Droylsden better possession after the break, it was the home side who missed a great chance to double their lead less than ten minutes after the re-start, with Roy Fogarty somehow screwing wide from Lawrence Hunter’s cross with only Ellison to beat.

Seeing that as a let off, Droylsden then upped the ante, and began to impart some pressure on the home goal.  Ben Hampson saw a shot deflected just wide after The Rail had failed to properly clear a Droylsden corner, and when the resultant next flag kick was delivered, Hampson showed great desire to thump his header past Tom Goodwin for the leveller.

The Bloods sniffed a winner, and Goodwin saved well from Smith, before recovering to turn Lee Cooper’s follow-up effort around the post.  The game then began to flow from end to end, with Fogarty again shooting wide, and Hampson and Mike Koral both saw efforts blocked for Droylsden.

The hosts should have secured the points when a loose header from Sharry gifted the ball to Lyn, but Ellsion saved bravely at the winger’s feet in a one-on-one situation to ensure a share of the spoils in what provide to be a fair result.
