SALFORD CITY 1 – 0 DROYLSDEN

 Manchester County F. A Challenge Cup (semi-final)

Tuesday 12 February 2013

by Gary Owen

The Bloods were dumped out of this competition at the penultimate stage, but can have few complaints, with a Danny White goal five minutes into the second half being the difference between the two sides.

The game was rather scrappy, yet played on a big pitch with a good surface, but premium chances were rare. Indeed, home ‘keeper Ritchie Branagan only had a solitary shot to save all night!

Osebi Abadaki threatened first for the hosts, but his effort was just wide of the mark.

Steve Hall then registered a shot off target for Droylsden – which summed-up Droylsden’s night.

Jimmy Derbyshire did well to hook the ball away from two City players in his own box whilst on his back, but the Droylsden full back soon limped off the field following a foul.

A Droylsden free kick into the Salford box was only palmed away by Branagan, but Joe O’Neill’s shot was blocked and Hall’s follow-up effort was off target.

Hall then played Matty Ward in on goal, but he blazed over with only Branagan to beat, before efforts at the other end from Nathan McDonald and Abadaki came to nothing, with the first half ending goalless.

The winning goal came on 50 minutes – Droylsden conceded a free kick on their left flank, and the delivery caused confusion in the box, with White getting the defining touch to steer into the bottom corner.

That signalled an inevitable onslaught from Droylsden, but their final ball was poor, providing Branagan with an evening’s catching practice.

Domain Rouse did beat two defenders, but shot wide, before Hall’s effort flew straight into the midriff of the grateful Branagan – Droylsden’s only effort on target all evening.

The Evo-Stick First Division (North) side now face either Maine Road or Tameside side Mossley in the final.
