DROYLSDEN 0 – 6 FC HALIFAX TOWN

Blue Square Bet North – Saturday 16 February 2013

 by Gary Owen

The Bloods were put to the sword by a clinical Halifax side, in a performance which saw former Hyde striker Gareth Seddon bag a hat-trick.

The rout started as early as the seventh minute, when Danny Lowe played a long ball for Liam Needham, and his cross found Alex Titchener, who couldn’t miss from 6 yards out.

Droylsden steadied the ship for a while, but the Shaymen hit back with two further goals before the break. Firstly, Seddon again exchanged passes with Needham before his shot deflected wickedly off Carlos Logan to nestle into the far corner, before a trademark strike from Dan Gardner made it three. The ex-Droylsden midfielder beat two on the edge of the box before finding the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

Hence, it was effectively game over by half-time, but Town wanted more, and added two further goals early in the second period. Seddon got himself behind the Droylsden rearguard to draw, and beat Dale Latham, but he still had Ashley Palmer to beat, which he did with aplomb to make it 4-0.

Just two minutes later, it was five when a Seddon shot was blocked, but Town kept the ball alive for Paul Marshall to cross low, where Jon Worthington side-footed home.

Five minutes from time, Seddon notched his third following a calamitous error by Ashley Palmer, the Droylsden centre-half gifting possession to Lee Gregory, who selfishly rolled in Seddon to record a huge win for The Shaymen.

The result sees The Bloods lie 16 points from safety with 16 games remaining, three of which are against teams immediately surrounding them. Nevertheless, it does look as though the Northern Premier League is beckoning.
