HISTON 3 – 1 DROYLSDEN

Blue Square Bet North – Saturday 2 February 2013

 by Gary Owen

Once again, Droylsden fell behind to early goals to leave themselves a mountain to climb, but a key factor in this defeat is that it was against one of the teams around The Bloods near the foot of the Blue Square Bet North table, and so leaves them further adrift of the pack with games starting to run out.

The visitors to Cambridgeshire were three down inside the opening 21 minutes, following an opening brace from Lewis Taffe, with the third coming from full back Harri Hawkins

The damage started as early as the 12th minutes, when James Stevenson put Taaffe through, and he slotted past the advancing Dale Latham.

Taaffe notched his and Histon’s second when Zak Mills was allowed the freedom of the right flank to cross low for the Stutes’ striker to convert.

Taaffe went close to making it a swift hat-trick, but Histon’s third goal arrived just three minutes later when the impressive Levi Porter turned the ball back into the danger area after Latham had failed to collect a cross, and Hawkins was on hand to side foot home.

Droylsden pulled a goal back on the half hour mark when a neat pass from Carlos Logan played Joe O’Neill in with only Callum Kitshca to beat. The Histon stopper got something on the Droylsden striker’s shot, but there was sufficient power to see it over the line.

At that point, some started to recall last season’s 5-5 thriller in the same fixture, but there were to be no further goals.

Although Droylsden gathered themselves to enjoy better spells of possession, it was the hosts who created the better chances, notably through Matty Waters who struck the upright.

Late on, Latham made three good stops from Stevenson (twice) and Waters, whilst at the other end a Mike Byron header and a stinging strike from Logan were both dealt with by Kitscha as Histon held on for a comfortable win in a game that also saw Mike Byron dismissed for two bookable offences to cap another miserable day for The Bloods.

It now seems really difficult to see how Droylsden can avoid the drop into the Northern Premier League. Whilst there are plenty of points to play for, their lack of creativity in the final third – which is unusual for a Droylsden side - makes it hard to see how they will get out of the dogfight they are most certainly in.
