Blue Square Bet North – Saturday 2 March 2013

 by Gary Owen

Avenue were in seventh heaven as they inflicted Droylsden’s heaviest defeat for over a decade, romping into a four goal lead inside 22 minutes.

Avenue showed their intent in the opening moments, as Alex Davidson stung Yannick Nlate’s palms, but the rout commenced on ten minutes when Davidson scored the first of his brace with a simple conversion at the far post.

Two minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead as Paul Walker converted at the second attempt, after seeing his initial effort strike the post.

It was 3-0 on fifteen minutes when James Knowles joined in to thump home a header from a Bradford corner, and seven minutes later Avenue struck their fourth when a great dummy by Tom Corner played-in Richard Marshall, who made no mistake from ten yards.

Davidson was then denied his second by the woodwork on the half hour mark, but the visitors hit five in rather fortuitous fashion before the break as Marshall’s cross from the right flank flew over everyone to nestle in the far corner of Nlate’s net.

The goals dried-up for much of the second period, but a mistake by Danny Stimpson almost gifted Bradford another goal. However, Nlate nipped the ball off Walker’s toes.

John Deacy’s men did add two further strikes late on. Firstly, it was Davidson who turned provider with an exquisite reverse pass to Aiden Savory to drill low past Nlate, and then in added time Davidson capped a fine display by adding the seventh.

Droylsden only created three reasonable chances during the entire 90 minutes – in the first half, Joe O’Neill shot wide with only John Lamb to beat, and Gomez Dali failed to get sufficient power on his shot to trouble Lamb; and in the closing minutes, Carlos Logan saw his penalty saved by the Avenue stopper to cap another miserable day for The Bloods.

Although Droylsden remain mathematically able to survive, surely now even the most ardent supporter must accept that the game’s up for this season.
