Blue Square Bet North – Saturday 9 March 2013

by Gary Owen

Droylsden produced a much improved display than of late, but have nothing to show for their efforts.

The Bloods registered more shots on target and enjoyed longer spells of possession, but it was their visitors who were able to create the better chances and capitalise.

The three goals were each very different: one of great quality; one due to a defensive error; and one a total fluke – but they all count.

Guiseley showed early intent when James Walshaw struck the post after a mistake by Luke Watson, but that was not before a flowing move from the hosts saw Jimmy Derbyshire fire wide with only Steve Drench to beat in the opening minute.

However, Guiseley took the lead on 22 minutes with a goal of great quality. Andy Holdsworth exchanged passes with Josh Wilson to curl a beautiful effort beyond Dale Latham and into the far corner from the edge of the box.

The Yorkshiremen doubled their lead four minutes later when a clanger from Lewis Chalmers gifted possession to Guiseley in a dangerous area, and Wilson fed Phil Marsh on the right flank, who drew Latham to drill into the bottom corner.

Just before the break a neat dummy played in Rhys Meynell inside the box, and his shot looked destined for the corner flag, before it unwittingly struck James Walshaw to fly into the net.

Droylsden bossed possession after the break, but Drench was not significantly tested, fielding long range efforts with some ease, and on the two occasions that Guiseley did register shots on target, they found Latham equal to the task.

Dave Pace fielded a number of new faces, with Luke Gallahger particularly impressing, plus the returning Lee McEvilly at centre half. However, his re-appearance in a Droylsden shirt lasted only six minutes due to injury.

With performances like this, the maths may still work out. If not, as least this present line-up is capable of going out with some pride showing.
