Blue Square Bet North – Tuesday 16 April 2013

 by Gary Owen

Despite there being nothing to play for except pride for either side in this end of season fixture, it nevertheless proved to be an entertaining game, with the teams only separated by a strange goal just before half-time.

The lively Jacob Hazel, on loan from Chesterfield, caused problems all night for the Droylsden defence, and he was unlucky to see his hooked effort strike the foot of the post after fifteen minutes, before seeing a goal ruled-out for use of his hand in the build-up.

At the other end, Burnley loanee Luke Gallagher saw a shot blocked, and Sam Minihan was well off target from the rebound.

There was then a great chance for skipper Rob Sissons at the far post from Stefan Cox’s deep cross, but after chesting the ball down, he blazed over from close range.

Paul Johnson then stabbed the ball over the Droylsden bar after it had been headed back across the face of goal, before Cox let fly from 22 yards – Aaron Taylor was beaten all ends up, the ball crashed against the Workington bar.

Dale Latham then held on to two Workington efforts, from Gareth Arnison and Niall Cowperthwaite, but just before the break the Droylsden goalkeeper came from his area to head clear. However, the ball fell to Hazel, who instantly lobbed the ball back into the unguarded net for what proved to be the only goal of the game.

Early in the second period, Latham had to tip over a piledriver of a free kick from ex-Blood Mark Boyd, before Taylor was forced into action at the other end to turn away Gallagher’s shot at full stretch.

As the game reached its climax, Lewis Killeen stabbed wide from Carlos Logan’s great cross, and Latham made a good save to deny Jonny Wright. However, Bloods’ substitute Joe O’Neill had a great chance to level matters in added time, but lost his footing at the crucial moment in the box having left two defenders in his wake.
