Blue Square Bet North – Saturday 20 April 2013

 by Gary Owen

Despite neither team having anything to play for, this was a game that was pleasant on the eye, and was graced with some excellent goals.

It was the hosts who began the better of the two teams and deserved their lead through a wonder strike from Burnley loanee Luke Gallagher, who beat Juan Martin from inside the centre circle, some 45 yards from goal.

However, that was not before former Exeter City striker Steve Basham had forced Dale Latham into a save, as did Chris Wilmott after City had fallen behind.

The visitors drew level with a good goal of their own as a lofted ball over the Droylsden defence found Jamie Cooke, and the ex-Oxford United forward coolly lifted the ball over the exposed Latham for the leveller.

Four minutes later, and City were in the lead – this time it was fellow striker Basham, who robbed Lee McEvilly of the ball before exchanging passes with Cooke and beating Latham with a low drive.

Zac McEachran benefitted from a good run by Callum McNish, but he was thwarted by a last ditch challenge from Jimmy Derbyshire as the visitors finished the half strongest.

Droylsden almost struck level on 63 minutes when Andy Langford steered an effort onto the Oxford bar from a Carlos Logan corner kick, after the City stopper had turned away a strike from Stefan Cox.

Moments later, though, City substitute Filipe Barcelos benefitted from more sloppy defending by the home defence to drive into the box and beat Latham with a shot into the far corner.

Darren Pond was denied by a good save by Latham as Oxford looked to extend their lead, but Droylsden never gave up hope, with shots from John Grant and Gallagher both saved with some ease by Martin in the closing stages.
