Evo-Stik Northern Premier League

 Monday 26 August 2013

It was badged as Droylsden v Droylsden Reserves, but it was the old guard – with no fewer than 8 former Butcher’s Arms men named in the Ashton squad - who came out on top, and in reality the Droylsden of today can be thankful that the margin of defeat wasn’t wider.

However, The Bloods got off to a flyer, when a calamitous error by Chris Lynch in the Robins’ rearguard presented Droylsden’s new Portuguese capture, Silvero, to round Paul Phillips for the opener to put the visitors into an early lead.

Yet it was only five minutes later when Ashton equalised when John Hardiker headed back across goal for Chris Denham to prod a dipping volley under Dale Latham’s bar.

Denham, along with Martin Pilkington, then turned provider to tee-up Joe O’Neill in front of goal, and although the Bloods’ faithful had seen the ex-Guiseley man fluff such chances in the past, this time he made no mistake.

As the half progressed, Denham was again in the thick of the action to set-up Lee Rick, who’s drive found the back of the net off the inside of the post, giving Latham no chance, and that seemed like the end of Droylsden’s day, despite a volley from Silvero flying over the bar on the stroke of half-time.

After the re-start, Pilkington tried his luck with an overhead kick that struck the post, before Papis Dietye shoved Denhman in the back, with Gary Gee despatching the penalty.

Droylsden survived two further decent shouts for penalties, before the referee’s final whistle ended any further pain.
