MARINE 5 – 1 DROYLSDEN

Evo-StikNPL – Arriva Stadium, Crosby

Tuesday 1 October 2013

By Gary Owen

Another month surpasses, and Droylsden still await their first victory of the season.

Despite their endeavour, they were yet again undone by too many defensive errors, and on Tuesday night they shipped another three first half goals inside ten minutes, just as they had done on Saturday at home to Nantwich Town.

Up to the point of the first goal, there was little to choose between the teams, with Daniel McLoughlin clipping an effort just over the Marine bar, and Paul Woolcoot doing likewise for the hosts.

However, on 26 minutes, debutante Bloods’ keeper, Danny Taberner failed to hold a rather weak effort from Will Jones, allowing the ball to escape his grasp and cross the line according to the referee’s assistant – a fact disputed by the Droylsden man, but really the original shot should have been a comfortable save.

Marine sensed blood, and kept the pressure on, which told again just two minutes later when Will Jones was allowed the freedom of the right flank to pick his spot beyond Taberner from just inside the box.

And it was effectively game over on 34 minutes, when Droylsden failed to fully clear a Marine free kick into their box, and there was Jones to notch his brace. Carlos Edmondson fizzed an effort just over the apex of bar and post, but The Bloods entered the break trailing by three goals.

However, just like Saturday, they commenced the second half well, and when substitute Dylan Maloney got behind the Marine back line to stab the ball under fellow substitute Callum Williams, a come-back did not seem totally impossible.

Hence, at that stage, it was somewhat against the run of play when Marine recorded their fourth goal on 73 minutes, which did signal game over. Once again, Droylsden failed to clear a free kick, and home skipper John Shaw thumped home.

Marine made it 5-1 with ten minutes remaining as a neat counter-attack was finished off by Michael Monaghan.

The Arriva Stadium club will also point to a couple of decent penalty claims that were turned down, which may have added to their tally. Hence, there can be no dispute regarding the outcome, with Marine – like many others so far this season – showing their superiority over Dave Pace’s struggling side.
