DROYLSDEN 0 – 3 NANTWICH TOWN

FA Trophy – First Round (Qualifying), Saturday 19 October 2013

By Gary Owen

Nantwich recorded second victory in three weeks at the Butcher’s Arms, but had to work much harder for their win on this occasion, as this was a much improved performance from The Bloods, with the scoreline somewhat flattering the visitors.

There was little to choose between the two sides in the opening period, with Jamie Tandy forcing a save from Jack Cudworth at his near post, and Harry Clayton scooping the ball over from Aaron Burns’ cross at the other end being the two best chances of the half.

Other half-chances during the opening period saw Ricardo Brandao shoot straight at Cudworth, and Sam Wilson head over the bar for Town.

Town gained the lead thanks to a gift from Ben Hampson. It was just after the hour mark when a howler from the Droylsden centre half – who had to that point produced a commanding display - Ben Hampsonlost possession of the ball on the edge of his own box, and Burns said ‘thank you very much’ as he slotted past the exposed Sam Andrew.

Clayton had a great chance to double Town’s lead when Hampson again mis-judged the ball, but he could only fire straight at Andrew with only the Droylsden keeper to beat.

However, Town did make it two when Ben Deegan headed home a Ross Davidson cross following a poor clearance from Hampson, whose afternoon was becoming one of those awful days at the office.

Domaine Roused headed Valter Fernandez’s cross over the bar for Droylsden, as Dave Pace’s men never gave up, but Deegan added his second for Nantwich with a minute to go with a sweet turn and shot that went in off the post, giving Andrew no chance.
