Having recently held another successful Christmas party (which was open to all – don’t miss out next time!), the Supporters’ Club have been busy planning their next fundraising sessions. Dates for your diary are as follows:

A rare opportunity to see Buzz Hawkins perform “The Bradshaws (of Barnoldswick)” – as heard on Key 103 and Tameside Radio – live, here at Droylsden FC. Only 100 tickets are available, and we expect them to sell out FAST! See Gary Owen, Colin Donald, Helen Walton, or Karen Quinn to secure yours. Priced at £10, they include a hot-pot supper and one free entry into the evening’s raffle (further raffle tickets can be purchased on the night). This really is one of those NOT TO BE MISSED events.

Spring Quiz (on all things general knowledge) – to be held at Droylsden Catholic Club.Teams of up to 5 players – entrance fee is just £1 per player (50p for Supporters’ Club members) and there’s a £20 prize for the winning team. A raffle will also be held on the evening.

Come and rack your brains!!

SUNDAY 4 MAY (1pm to 10pm)

Charity sponsored walk around all of Droylsden pubs and clubs (plus one or two others from the surrounding area) – over 20 venues in total. Funds raised will be split between the SC funds and a national children’s charity (yet to be decided). If you’ve not been before, you should come along – open to all –and it’s good fun! Watch this space later in the season for further details.

Having raised money, what do we do with it? Well, our primary existence is to aid the Football Club in any way we can – for example, the modern box style nets you see each home match day were purchased by the SC, as were Stewards’ Jackets and corner flags, as were the huge metal containers for the kit on away days. More recently, we co-funded the purchase of the club’s defibrillator (along with the FA and British Heart Foundation). This is held behind the main bar.

Brothers Dennis and Les Wragg both played for Droylsden FC in the 1960s, and their good friend, Roy Gartside, often visits the island of Gozo (which sits in the Mediterranean Sea, just off the west coast of Malta, and is part of the country of Malta). Upon chatting to locals, Roy became aware of local club Xewkija Tigers FC, and told of his good friends who used to play for Droylsden. Well, that was it – “here you go, Roy – take this pennant as a gift from XewkijaTigers toDroylsden FC.” And Roy did just that – and so Roy’s friend and SC committee member, Paul Walton (right) presented the pennant to Droylsden FC Chairman and Manager, Dave Pace in the clubhouse a few weeks ago.

The pennant is on display in the vault noticeboard, and SC Chair Gary Owen hopes to return the favour with some Droylsden FC memorabilia on a future planned trip to Malta either this coming summer or next – watch this space for an update.
